AtmaConnect is a growing company behind AtmaGO, a social app empowering people in the developing world. They needed a rebranded, easy-to-manage website that would effectively communicate their mission.
Inquire to better understand
Two simple questions to start with:
- What is the main purpose of this website?
- And with this in mind, what is the order of importance of the information we want to display?
As Atma had been recently selected to IDEO.org’s Amplify program, we decided to follow a similar design approach. I made a quick study of other non-profit websites, and their good and not-so-good design decisions.
Design to tell a story
Atma's material was restructured and reformatted in sections for a story-telling approach. The focus was clearly directed on emphasizing the social impact of the app in order to encourage donations. This lead me to selecting powerful catchphrases for each section and to present these highlighted. My aim was to retain visitor’s attention by keeping the text concise and creating an inspiring visual experience without losing the seriousness of the message. A simple structure with as little hidden levels as possible supported this. I also spent time on advising Atma on the quality of photographs they would need to use in order to achieve the modern editorial look we were after. The color-scheme and the layout were coordinated to match the mobile app.
Quick and flexible implementation
Wordpress platform was selected because the Atma Team was already familiar with its CMS. I had started the initial design on a theme I made from scratch but ended up migrating everything into a commercial template that allowed Atma to save time when they would need to expand the initial scope of the site easily without my intervention. The current version of the site is regularly updated by Atma and they’ve modified the page templates to add more content.PS. This portfolio website is another example of me coding a site from scratch using Bootstrap.
